During the year of 1942, the United States Army V Corps would arrive in Northern Ireland for its induction into the European Theater of Operations. The American forces would consist of the 1st Armored and 34th Infantry Divisions and for the better part of 5 months they would train and maneuver through the Irish terrain, honing their skills for the imminent engagement of the Nazi war machine.
In June of that year, a letter that appeared on nearly every bulletin board called for volunteers from the V Corps. General George C. Marshall, chief of staff of the United States Army, directed a proposal to train a select number of American troops along side British Commandos to form the core structure of an American Commando Unit. This unit would retain U.S. doctrine, equipment and methods, but would also adopt special procedures and tactics British Commandos applied against their enemies in combat. Rather than refer to the men in this unit as “commandos”, American high command felt it necessary to choose an alternate name seeing as the title carried a certain glamour that was rightfully British. As a result, General Marshall himself would select a name from American history that he felt appropriately defined the purpose of these men. The units adopted title would end up being that of the famous hit-and-run raiders led by Major Robert Rogers against the French and Indians during our pre-Revolutionary age. These men were called “The Rangers” and June 19th 1942 marked the birth of the first American Ranger unit of World War II.

The journal entries you are about to read are that of the fictional Charles Theodore Harley a.k.a. “Charlie Harley”. The situations, dates and combat scenarios written of in these entries are taken from the actual events and actions of the 1st Ranger Battalion in WWII.
